What’s the risk of somebody knowing how much money you have in your bank account? What could they do with that information?

Hi, I’m just feeling paranoid because I recently made a purchase with my card at a vendor through their POS terminal, it was contactless so there was no PIN number entered. The person operating the machine printed a merchant and customer copy of the receipt but the merchant copy was badly printed and wasn’t clear but the customer copy was fine.

It seemed like the person operating the machine was inexperienced because he thought there was an error but the customer copy showed the purchase was made. He was asking me to tap my card again and I said no to avoid being charged twice and showed him the SMS notification from my bank on my phone showing that a purchase was made, the amount charged, merchant name, last 4 digits of my card and also my available balance. He also kept the customer receipt since his copy was unclear, but I took a picture of it.

I now feel stupid for showing him the SMS notification and letting him keep the customer copy instead of simply asking him to just reprint the merchant copy for himself instead.

So my question is, can that person do anything with any of that information that was in the SMS notification and by keeping the customer copy of the receipt? Also both the merchant and customer copy showed the first six and last four numbers of my card with only the middle 6 digits and expiry date hidden. I find that odd since the standard is to hide everything except the last four digits.

Apologies for the long post and I appreciate any answers, thank you.

The first 4 digits basically just tell if it is MC or ViSA so that is not a worry, though it is different. Did they just glance at your SMS notification or they keep it? Just glancing at it probably wasn’t memorable, but the rest of the info is what they have access to anyway. The total in your account may just give them incentive if they are already criminally inclined, but overall you don’t have that much to worry about. Just keep a close eye on your account for unauthorized charges, which you should anyways.

Thanks for the reply, they just read the notification on my phone but didn’t keep it or take any pictures of my screen. But they kept the customer copy of the receipt which only hides the expiry date of my card and the middle six digits but the first 6 and last four digits are shown. Should I be concerned? The merchant copy probably would have been the same as the customer copy right?

They can’t really do anything with that information, unless they find out you have a ton of money and decide to rob you or something lol. If the person knows how much money you have and what card type you use, they can do…. absolutely nothing. outside of tell people how much money you have and share what card type you use lol.

There’s nothing that person can do with that information. You shouldn’t worry about it.
